武汉大学2013—2014学年度第一学期2012级《大学英语三级》期末试卷(A卷)

Part II Reading Comprehension (30%)

Passage One

The number of people who are obese is rising. About 1.2 billion people in the world are overweight and at least 300 million of them are obese, even though obesity is one of the 10 most preventable health risks, according to the World Health Organization. In the United States, more than 97 million adults — that’s more than half — are overweight and almost one in five adults is obese. Among teenagers and kids 6 years and older, more than 15% are overweight — that’s more than three times the number of young people who were overweight in the 1970s. At least 300,000 deaths every year in the United States can be linked to obesity.

People gain weight when the body takes in more calories than it burns off. Those extra calories are stored as fat. The amount of weight gain that leads to obesity doesn’t happen in a few weeks or months. Because being obese is more than just being a few pounds overweight, people who are obese have usually been getting more calories than they need for years.

Genes — small parts of the DNA that people inherit from their parents and that decide traits like hair or eye color — can play an important role in this weight gain. Some of your genes tell your body how to metabolize food and how to use extra calories or stored fat. Some people burn calories faster or slower than others do because of their genes.

Obesity can run in families, but just how much is due to genes is hard to decide. Many families eat the same food, have the same habits (like snacking in front of TV), and tend to think alike when it comes to weight issues (like urging children to eat a lot at dinner so they can grow “big and strong”). All of these situations can contribute to weight gain, so it can be difficult to figure out if a person is born with a tendency to be obese or overweight or learns eating and exercise habits that lead to weight gain. In most cases, weight problems arise from a combination of habits and genetic factors. Certain illnesses, like thyroid gland problems or unusual genetic disorders, are uncommon causes for people gaining weight.

Sometimes emotions can fuel obesity as well. People tend to eat more when they are upset, anxious, sad, stressed out, or even bored. Then after they eat too much, they may feel bad about it and eat more to deal with those bad feelings, creating a tough cycle to break.

One of the most important factors in weight gain is a sedentary lifestyle. People are much less active today than they used to be, with televisions, computers, and video games filling their spare time. Cars dominate our lives, and fewer people walk or ride bikes to get somewhere. As lives become busier, there is less time to cook healthy meals, so more and more people eat at restaurants, grab takeout food, or buy quick foods at the grocery store or food market to heat up at home. All of these can contain much more fat and calories than meals prepared from fresh foods

at home.

17. Many factors may contribute to obesity. Which of the following is NOT mentioned by the author?

A) Genes.B) Emotions.C) Different jobs.D) Lifestyle.

18. When family influence is concerned, all of the following situations can contribute to weight gain, except that ________.

A) family members eat the same foods.

B) family members have the same habits, such as snacking in front of the TV.

C) family members tend to think alike when it comes to weight issues.

Passage Two

I’ve been writing for most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinction and one practice that has helped my writing processes tremendously. The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much we might like to think so.

Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest barrier to writing that most of us encounter. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying to capture a fleeting thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking that it is.

The practice that can help you past your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing”. In free writing, the objective is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas will come out from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notepad or your screen.

Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the page as the deadline draws near.

Instead of staring at a blank screen start filling it with words no matter how bad. Halfway through your available time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to finished product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.

21. When the author says the creative mind and the critical mind “cannot work in parallel” (Line 4, Para. 1) in the writing process, he means

________.

A) one cannot use them at the same time

B) no one can be both creative and critical

C) they are in constant conflict with each other

D) they cannot be regarded as equally important

22. What prevents people from writing on is ________.

A) putting their ideas in raw form

B) trying to capture fleeting thoughts

C) attempting to edit as they write

D) ignoring grammatical soundness

23. What is the chief objective of the first stage of writing?

A) To get one’s ideas down.B) To collect raw materials.

C) To choose an appropriate topic.C) To organize one’s thoughts logically.

24. One common concern of writers about“free writing” is that ________.

A) it does not help them to think clearly

B) it takes too much time to edit afterwards

C) it overstresses the role of the creative mind

D) it may bring about too much criticism

25. In what way does the critical mind help the writer in the writing process?

A) It allows him to sit on the side and observe.

B) It saves the writing time available to him.

C) It helps him to come up with new ideas.

D) It refines his writing into better shape.

I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language — the way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth. Language is the tool of my trade. And I use them all — all the Englishes I grew up with.

Recently, I was made keenly aware of the different Englishes I do use. I was giving a talk to a large group of people, the same talk I had already given to half a dozen other groups. The nature of the talk was about my writing, my life, and my book, The Joy Luck Club. The talk was going along well enough until I remembered one major difference that made the whole talk sound wrong. My mother was in the room. And it was perhaps the first time she had heard me give a lengthy speech, using the kind of English I have never used with her — a speech filled with carefully constructed grammatical phrases, burdened, it suddenly seemed to me, with nominalized forms, past perfect tenses, conditional phrases, all the forms of standard English that I had learned in school and through books, the forms of English I did not use at home with my mother.

Just last week, I was walking down the street with my mother, and I again found myself conscious of the English I was using, the English I do use with her. We were talking about the price of new and used furniture and I heard myself saying this: “Not waste money that way.” My husband was with us as well, and he didn’t notice any change in my English. And then I realized why. It’s because over the twenty years that we have been together I’ve often used the same kind of English with him, and sometimes he even uses it with me. It has become our language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk, the language I grew up with.

You should know that my mother’s expressive command of English doesn’t reflect how much she actually understands. She reads financial reports, listens to Wall Street Week, converses daily with her stockbroker, and reads many types of books with ease. Yet some of my friends tell me they only understand 50 percent of what my mother says. Some say they understand 80 to 90 percent. Some say they understand none of it, as if she were speaking pure Chinese. But to me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It’s my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and imagery. That was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world.

Lately, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to other people as “broken” English. But I shrink with pain when I say that. It always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”, as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked certain wholeness and soundness. I’ve heard other terms used, “limited English”, for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people’s perceptions of the “limited” English speaker.

29. We can conclude from paragraph 4 that ________.

Passage Four A for Y, B for N, and C for NG.

Examinations have become a well-established means of measuring a person’s understanding of a subject. It has been argued that examinations may help to identify the most able learners and motivate learners to work hard. However, in recent years, the need for examinations has been brought into question as a result of the pressure they exert on students. In this essay, I examine arguments that support examinations and those that do not. I then go on to consider whether or not examinations should be retained as the main mode of assessing learning.

Many education experts have presented evidence to show that examinations encourage students to take their work seriously by giving them a concrete goal to aim for. Without examinations schools would almost certainly have far greater numbers of poorly motivated students than is the case at present. In the examination students are stimulated by the competitive atmosphere to produce the best work and time pressures simply reflect that in the real world all tasks are tackled under time constraints. Examinations stimulate hard work and healthy competition, which reflects the realities of the outside world.

However, examinations can affect the psychological state of candidates and cause some severe psychological problems. In fact, research findings show that students who are relaxed tend to do better than those who are anxious.

The next consideration is the measuring function of examinations. Society needs a standardized system of assessment for deciding who will further education and who will do particular jobs. Many important selection procedures rely on examination results. For example, without the objective measurements offered by examination results employers would find it very difficult to know who to employ and at which level of responsibility to employ people. University administrators would also have no way of knowing who was suitable to undertake degree-level studies. Examinations also help educational institutions to measure the effectiveness of their own teaching methods.

The validity of examination results has, however, been challenged by Fan, who argues that examinations encourage students to memorize information rather than understand it thoroughly. Examinations may not provide a valid standardized way to compare students’ ability, if they only measure what a candidate has memorized rather than understood. If high grades are achieved at the expense of “deep” learning they are meaningless and can not be treated as valid.

A third argument in favor of examinations is that the alternative mode of assessment, continuous assessment by coursework, has serious disadvantages. In continuous assessment students, particularly the poorer ones, get a great deal of help from teachers. This attention pulls them up to a higher overall grade than they may have achieved in an examination. Further, continuous assessment has a “levelling” effect---teachers avoid awarding grades at the top and bottom of the scale---with the result that students’ marks cluster around the mean grade. Employment and future study decisions are then made very difficult because students appear to be mostly of the same ability. Examinations, however, have the effect of spreading students more realistically over the full range of possible grades and the results obtained in this way provide employers and universities with much more reliable data on which to base their decisions

However, some educators argue that continuous assessment ensures that teachers will cover the full range of topics on the subject syllabuses. Teachers are always very anxious about examinations results and feel that their competence is judged, to a large extent, on the results achieved by their students. Consequently, teachers often concentrate only on what is directly relevant to examinations. Continuous assessment ensures that all topic areas on the syllabus are given equal attention.

In this essay, I have discussed some of the main arguments for and against the use of examinations as the main mode of assessing learning. Benefits of examinations were explained, for example, their provision of a standardized form of assessing candidates’ suitability for employment or further studies, and their potential to stimulate students to work hard by creating a competitive atmosphere. I also analyzed some of the main arguments against examinations. Drawbacks include the harmful psychological effects they have on some students and the claim that examinations encourage memorization rather than understanding of information. I also pointed out that concern about examinations may cause some teachers to limit the topic areas covered in a course.

Evaluating the evidence leads to conclude that examinations should be retained. They are a reasonably reliable indicator of students’ academic ability and allow employers and educational administrators to base their judgments on objective rather subjective or impressionistic data. I am not, however, in favor of examinations being the only form of assessment. I would recommend that most courses of study should allot (分配) 40% of marks to continuous assessment but the remaining 60% should be reserved for the examination. In this way, a fair chance will be achieved between grades scored throughout a period of study and those earned under examination conditions

31. A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of examinations is presented in the passage.

32. To avoid severe psychological problems caused by examinations, the American authorities grant teenagers the admission to universities without

taking entrance examinations

34. Continuous assessment is not favored because it doesn’t ensure that all topic areas on the syllabus are given equal attention.

35. The author holds the view that on the whole examinations are beneficial.

After a while the Dutchmen saw that the two Belgians only had one ticket between them and asked how they managed to achieve this. The Belgians explained that when they heard the conductor approaching from the other end of the carriage, the two of them left their seats, went into the toilet and locked the door. When the conductor knocked on the toilet door, saying, "Tickets, please!", they pushed one ticket under the door. It was then stamped and pushed back under the door again. The Dutchmen thought this was a very good idea and the following morning bought one ticket between them. When they got to their carriage there was only one Belgian. They told him what they had done and asked the Belgian if he had a ticket as he was traveling on his own. The Belgian said he did not have a ticket at all and when they asked how he proposed to manage to travel free of charge, he told them they would have to wait and see until the conductor arrived, but he had no doubt that he would manage it without difficulty. As soon as they heard the conductor coming, the two Dutchmen immediately went to the toilet and locked the door. A few moments later, the Belgian followed them down the corridor and knocked on the toilet door, saying, "Tickets, please!" One ticket appeared under the door. Questions: 1. Where did the story take place 2. What did the two Dutchmen want to know from the two Belgians 3. How did the Dutchmen feel about the Belgians' behavior 4. I work as a salesclerk in a big department store in Fuji, Japan. Six years ago when I was 21 years old, I went to California to attend college. Life in the United States was much more difficult than I had ever imagined. It wasn't like the descriptions I had read in my textbooks. People often seemed tense and so I felt very alone. One of my hardest classes was physical education. We often played volleyball. All the other students were good at it, but I clearly wasn't. One afternoon, the teacher asked me to hit the ball to my classmates. For most people, this would be easy but I was terrified that I would make a fool of myself. When one of the boys on my team saw how nervous I was, he walked up to me and whispered, "Come on, you can do that." You can't imagine how those words of encouragement made me feel. I was so happy that I almost cried. I managed to hit the ball and I think I thanked the young man, but I'm not sure. I have never forgotten his kind words of encouragement. He probably doesn't even remember what he said to me or how much his kindness meant to me. Whenever things aren't going well, I think of those simple words of encouragement: Come on, you can do that.

Unit 6 Risks Risks and You At some time or other, all of us have played the part of a hypochondriac, imagining that we have some terrible disease on the strength of very minor symptoms. Some people just have to hear about a new disease and they begin checking themselves to see if they may be suffering from it. But fear of disease is not our only fear, and neither is risk of disease the only risk we run. Modern life is full of all manner of threats-to our lives, our peace of mind, our families, and our future. And from these threats come questions that we must pose to ourselves: Is the food I buy safe? Are toys for my children likely to hurt them? Should my family avoid smoked meats? Am I likely to be robbed on vacations? Our uncertainties multiply indefinitely. Anxiety about the risks of life is a bit like hypochondria; in both, the fear or anxiety feeds on partial information. But one sharp difference exists between the two. The hypochondriac can usually turn to a physician to get a definitive clarification of the situation-either you have the suspected disease or you don't. It is much more difficult when anxiety about other forms of risk is concerned, because with many risks, the situation is not as simple. Risks are almost always a matter of probability rather than certainty. You may ask, "Should I wear a seat belt?" If you' re going to have a head-on collision, of course. But what if you get hit from the side and end up trapped inside the vehicle, unable to escape because of a damaged seat belt mechanism? So does this mean that you should spend the extra money for an air bag? Again, in head-on collisions, it may well save your life. But what if the bag accidentally inflates while you are driving down the highway, thus causing an accident that would never have occurred otherwise? All of this is another way of saying that nothing we do is completely safe. There are risks, often potentially serious ones, associated with every hobby we have, every job we take, every food we eat-in other words, with every action. But the fact that there are risks associated with everything we are going to do does not, or should not, reduce us to trembling neurotics. Some actions are riskier than others. The point is to inform ourselves about the relevant risks and then act accordingly. For example, larger cars are generally safer than small ones in collisions. But how much safer? The answer is that you are roughly twice as likely to die in a serious crash in a
