Passage 1

Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing still puzzles old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ballgame, come back three and a half hours later, and they're still sitting on the sofa, talking?

What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?

Betty shrugs. Talk? We're friends.

Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian

Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear. Women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is "marked and unmistakable".

More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not

name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet

three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best

friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or

the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress(情感危机). "Most women," says Rubin, "identified at least one, usually more,

trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and

they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in

their lives".

"In general," writes Rubin in her new book, "women's friendships

with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men's relationships are marked by shared activities." For the most part,

Rubin says , interactions (交往) between men are emotionally

controlled-a good fit with the social requirements of "manly

behavior".

"Even when a man is said to be a best friend," Rubin writes, "the

two share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman's

closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a

failing marriage, it wasn't unusual to hear a man say he didn't know

his friend's marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one

night asking if he could sleep on the sofa."

6.What old Harold cannot understand or explain is the fact that __B__.

A. he is treated as an outsider rather than a husband

B. women have so much to share

C. women show little interest in ballgames

D. his wife is difficult to talk to

7.Rubin's study shows that for emotional support a married woman is

more likely to turn to__B__.

A. a male friend

B. a female friend

C. her parents

D. her husband

8.According to the text, which type of behavior is NOT expected of a

man by society? ( C )

A. Ending his marriage without good reason.

B. Spending too much time with his friends.

C. Complaining about his marriage trouble.

D. Going out to ballgames too often.

9.Which of the following statements is best supported by the last paragraph? ( A )

A. Men keep their innermost feeling to themselves.

B. Women are more serious than men about marriage.

C. Men often take sudden action to end their marriage.

D. Women depend on others in making decisions.

10.The research done by psychologist Rubin centers on __B__.

A. happy and successful marriage

B. friendships of men and women

C. emotional problems in marriage

D. interactions between men and women

第二部分:阅读理解

There is no doubt that man is a member of the animal kingdom. Anyone who has thought about this fact seriously must have wondered how it has come about that man has achieved a position so supreme(最

高的) among the myriad kinds of animal life. Two characteristics of man, in comparison with all other animals, that stand out above all others are the creation and use of tools and the development and use

of language. Since no other animals have achieved these abilities, it must be assumed that man's evolutionary development led to his

capacity to create and use tools and to devise and use language.

Once these abilities and practices evolved, they probably became driving forces in the further evolution of man. Those members of the species who become most proficient(精通的) in the fabrication of

tools and in the command of language and thought would tend to

survive and maintain their kind for good, at the expense of those of lesser ability.

11.Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage? ( A )

A. Tools and language are either the effects or the causes of human evolution.

B. No other animals have achieved human abilities.

About Television

Television has both advantages and disadvantages to us. On the one hand, it can make us informed of daily news, let us know the outside world, provide lessons for the learners, and can even bring joy to our lives as well.

On the other hand, some television programs have been extremely harmful to the young. A case in point is the movies with violent scenes. Watching TV too long can do harm to our body and it's a great distraction for us to work.

So young people should learn to get ride of the bad influences of TV and learn to make use of the advantages that TV can bring us.

1. Today, as in every other day of the year, more than 3,000 U.S. adolescents will smoke their first cigarette on their way to becoming regular smokers as adults. During their lifetime, it can be expected that of these 3,000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by a smoking-related disease. The number of deaths attributed to cigarette smoking outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death. Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percent, smoking rates among youth have declined. While the decline is impressive, several important issues must be raised. First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late 1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among female by nearly 10 percent. The statistic is reversing. Third, several recent studies have indicate high school dropouts have excessively high smoking rates, as much as 75 percent . Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definite reasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort to determine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth. 1. According to the author, the deaths among youth are mainly caused by _____. A. traffic accidents B. smoking-related diseases C. murder D. all of these 2. Every day there are over _____young people who will become regular smoker. A. 75 B. 23 C. 30 D. 3,000 3. By "dropout" (in paragraph 3) the author means______. A. students who failed the examination

第2次作业 一、阅读理解(本大题共100分,共5小题,每小题20分) 1. Prehistoric men and women enjoyed a more varied diet than people do now, since they ate species of plant and several hundreds thousands types of living things. But only a tiny percentage of these were ever domesticated. Modern shops have hastened a trend towards specialization which began in the earliest days of agriculture. The food of the rich countries has become cheaper relative to wages. It is speedily distributed in supermarkets. But the choice annually becomes less and less great. Even individual foods themselves become more standardized. We live in the world of carrot specially blunted in order to avoid making a hole in the bag, and the tomato grown to meet a demand for a standard weight of weighting tomatoes to a kilo. Siri von Reis asks: "Only the three major cereals (谷物类食物)and perhaps ten other widely cultivated species stand between famine and survival for the world" s human population and a handful of drug plants has served Western civilization for several thousand years. A rather obvious question arises: Are we missing something?” After all, there are 800 000 species of plant on earth. (1). Tn prehistoric times people. A.ate much more than we do today B.lived mainly on plant food C.had a wide-ranging diet D.were more fussy about what they ate (2). Most of us have come to expect A. no variation in our diet B. a reduction in food supplies C. a specialist diet D. food conforming to a set standard (3). The specialization of food was started by
