(完整版)新概念英语第三册课文及详解第1课

Lesson 1 A puma at large Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar. The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of 'cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside. Language points Pay attention: The points below are not covered by the mp3. It is better for you to listen to the mp3 first and try to take notes by yourselves. 1,a puma at large at large 1:逃遁的,没有被控制的。

新概念英语第三册第60课-Too-early-and-too-late

新概念英语第三册第60课:Too early and too late Lesson 60 Too early and too late太早和太晚 Listen to the tape then answer the question below. 听录音,然后回答以下问题。 Why did the young girl miss the train? Punctuality is a necessary habit in all public affairs in civilized society. Without it, nothing could ever be brought to a conclusion; everything would be in state of chaos. Only in a sparsely-populated rural community is it possible to disregard it. In ordinary living, there can be some tolerance of unpunctuality. The intellectual, who is working on some abstruse problem, has everything coordinated and organized for the matter in hand. He is therefore forgiven if late for a dinner party. But people are often reproached for unpunctuality when their only fault is cutting things fine. It is hard for energetic, quick-minded people to waste time, so they are often tempted to finish a job before setting out to keep an appointment. If no accidents occur on the way, like punctured tires, diversions of traffic, sudden descent of fog, they will be on time. They are often more industrious, useful citizens than those who are never late. The over-punctual can be as much a trial to others as the unpunctual. The guest who arrives half an hour too soon is the greatest nuisance. Some friends of my family had this irritating habit. The only thing to do was ask them to come half an hour later than the other guests. Then they arrived just when we wanted them. If you are citing a train, it is always better to be comfortably early than even a fraction of a minted too late. Although being

Lesson 56 Our neighbor , the river Key to Composition A possible answer Plan and ideas for composition (b) Title: A dark and gloomy street Introduction: Dark and gloomy street — on way home from party — short cut Development: Someone standing at far end, under lamplight — wasn't frightened — felt person did not mean to harm me — not sure what to do — decided to walk on towards the light The "guide" started walking ahead of me — dressed in long gown — dim glow— felt safe and followed — part of town, I realized, that I had been warned about — but nothing happened to me — and near bright lights — "guide" just disap-peared Conclusion: A young person killed that night — was the guide my guardian angel? Composition It was a dark and gloomy street. 1 was on my way home from a friend's party and had deckled to take a short cut. I had just turned the corner from the main street and had started walking towards the light at the end of the short street. Suddenly, almost by magic, I thought, there was someone standing at the far end, under the lamplight. Most people would have been frightened, perhaps terrified. I wasn't at all frightened. Perhaps I should have been. There was someone there. I felt somehow that the person — and I couldn't see whether it was a man or a woman — did not mean to harm me. Although I wasn't frightened, I still wasn't sure what to do. Should I walk on towards the end of the street and towards the light and towards the person? or should I go back the way I had come? I decided to walk on towards the light. The "guide", as I called the person later, stood and seemed to wait until I was halfway down the street, and then started walking ahead of me. Even now I couldn't describe him or her: he or she seemed to be dressed in a long gown, but there was a dim glow all around him/her. Certainly I felt safe and followed the person down several streets that I did not know. It was a part of town, I realized, that I had been warned about — but nothing happened tome — and as soon as we were near the bright lights of the main road, my "guide" just disappeared. The following day I heard that a young person had been killed walking home alone not very far from where I was that night. I don't care what other people think. I am sure that the "guide" was my guardian angel and that he or she looked after me.
