三、阅读理解(每小题2分,共20分)

Language is , and should be, a living things, constantly enriched with new words and forms of expression. But there is a vital distinction between good developmenst, which add to the language, enabling us to say things we could not say before, and bad developmenst, which subtract from the language by rendering it less precise. A vivacious, colourful use of words is not to be confused with mere slovenliness. The kind of slovenliness in which some professionals deliberately indulge is prehaps akin to the cult of the unfinished work ,which has eroded most of the arts in our time. And the true answer to it is the same-that art is enhanced, not hindered, by discpline. You cannot carve satisfactorily in butter.

The corruption of writing Englihs has been accompanied by an even sharper decline in the standard of spoken English . We speak very much less well than was common among educated Englishmen a generation or two ago.

The modern theatre has played a baneful part in dimming our appreciation of langrage. Instead of the immensely artculate dialogue of, for example, Shaw(who was also very insistent on good pronunciation), audiences are now srbjected to streams of barely literate tirvia, often designed, only too well, to exhibit?lack of communication? ,and larded with the obscenities and grammatical errors of the intellectually impoverished. Impoverished. Emily Post once advised her readers:?The theatre is the best possible place to hear correctly-enunciated speech,? Alas, no more. One youny actress was recently reported to be taking lessons in how to speak badly, so that she should fit in better.

But the BBC is the worst traitor. After years of very successfully helping to raise the general standard of spoken English, it suddedly went into reverse. As the head of the Pronunciation Unit coyly put it:?In the 1960?s the BBC opened the field to a much wider range of speakers.? To hear a BBC disc jockey talling to the latest ape-like pop idol is a truly shocking experience of verbal squalor. And the prospect seems to be of even worse to come . School teachers are actively encouraged to ignore little Johnny?s incoherent grammar, atrocious spelling and haphazard punctuation, because worrying about such things might inhibit his creative genius.

1. …Art is enhanced, not hindered, by discipline?(line8)means .

A. an artist?s work will be finer if he observes certain aesthetic standards.

B. an unfinished work is bound to be comparatively inferior

C. the skill of certain atrsts conceals their slovenliness

D. artistic expression is inhibited by too many rules.

C. been a welcome and positive influence

D. had a ruinous effect

3. A certain actress is said to have taken lessons because .

A she has been too accustomed to leading roles

B. her delivery was too refined for the parts she had to play

C. she could hardlly make herself heard by the audience

4. Teachers are likey to overlook linguistic lapse in their pupils since .

A. they find that chilren to longer respond to this kind of discipline nowadays

B. they fear the children may become less cokerent

C. more importance is now attached to oral expression

D. the children may be discouraged from giving vent to their own ideas.

5. Which of the following can be chosen as a title for this passage?

A. Language Should Be A Living Thing

B. People?s Appreciation of Language

C. BBC-the worst Traitor

D. The Dccline of Language

If you ask some people,“How did you learn English so well?”You may get a surprising answer:“In my sleep!”

These are people who have taken part in one of the recent experiments to test a learm-while-you-sleep method, which are now being tried in several countries, and with several subjects . English is only one of them.

Scientists say that this sleep-study method greatly speeds language learning. They say that an ordinary person can learn two or three times as much during sleep as in the same period during the ady –and this does not affect his rest in any way. As a matter of fact, sleep-teaching will only hammer(强行灌输)into your head what you have studied already while you are awake.

In one experiment, ten lessons were broadcast(广播)over the radio for about two weeks, Each lesson lasted twelve hours from 8 p . m . to 8 a . m . The first three hours of English grammar and vocabulary were given with the student awake. At 11 P.m .a soft music was broadcast to send the student to sleep and for the next three hours the radio whispered (低声地讲)the lesson again into his sleeping ears . At 2 a.m..a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping student up for a few minutes to review the lesson. Then soft songs sent him back to rest again while the radio went on . At 5 o?clock his sleep ended and he had to go through the lesson again for three hours before breakfast.

The student who took part in the experiment said that it was a good method for learnning languages.

大学英语精读第一册课文翻译全

Unit1 课程开始之际,就如何使学习英语的任务更容易提出一些建议似乎正当其时。 Some Strategies or Learning English Sailing Round the Word
