An amazing brain

The most difficult thing for university student Shaun Rogers is opening his classroom door. Shaun can't do this without help because he's only six years old. He's the youngest person ever to study at Rochester University in New York. Shaun began reading at two, and by four he knew a lot about many subjects from astronomy to zoology. By the age of five, he was regularly talking to university professors about his ideas. He has just completed his first book which will come out in a few months, shortly after his seventh birthday. "I love learning," says Shaun. "My hero is the scientist Albert Einstein because he never brushed his hair or wore socks."

Psychologists have found it difficult to test Shaun's cleverness because they do not have high enough scores for him. Shaun's mother first knew her son was different when he kept crying at play school because he was bored with the children's games. She started teaching him at home after finding that local schools were not prepared for children who learnt at Shaun's speed. Now Shaun is studying geography at Rochester University and using the Internet to complete his high school studies.

However, some psychologists warn that too much study can stop a child from growing up in

a healthy way. "I don't care how clever the kid is, six-year-olds have to play with their friends," says Dr Brian Wood. Mrs. Rogers doesn't agree that her son's time is completely taken up by school work. "He loves the violin and has many outdoor interests, such as camping, fishing and swimming, just like other boys of his age."

The Mary Celeste

On 5th December 1872, Captain Morehouse was sailing in the Atlantic Ocean not far from Spain when he saw another ship. It was moving strangely, so he sailed closer to have a look. He saw that the ship was called the Mary Celeste. He knew the ship because he saw it leave New York a month earlier, on 7th November. Morehouse knew that Captain Briggs was a very good sailor, so he was surprised to see the ship out of control.

Captain Morehouse climbed onto the Mary Celeste. There was nobody there! He looked at the ship's diary in the hope that he could find some useful information, but nobody had written anything in it since 25th November. On that day, the ship had been more than 1,000 kilometres away. The Mary Celeste had sailed for nine days without any sailors.

Morehouse was very surprised. He found food, clothes and other private things on the ship, but there weren't any people. There was nothing very wrong with the ship, but all the small boats were missing, and things were very wet. They , brought the ship back to Gibraltar on 13th December. What had happened to the captain of the Mary Celeste and the other seven men sailing it? Why had they left their things on the ship? And where were the captain's wife and child, who had been on the ship too? Nobody knew.

Many people had ideas about what happened. , Arthur Conan Doyle, a writer in England, wrote | a story about the Mary Celeste in 1884. Then in 1913, a schoolteacher called Howard Linford also wrote a story. He said that the had met one of the sailors from the ship and he had told him this story: one day, the captain of the Mary Celeste had a swimming race with another sailor in the sea. Sharks ate both men. Then, the other sailors fell into the water. The story is probably not true, but nobody has ever discovered the truth about the Mary Celeste.
