Lesson 74 Out of the limelight

【Text】

An ancient bus stopped by a dry river bed and a party of famous actors and actresses got off. Dressed in dark glasses and old clothes, they had taken special precautions so that no one should recognize them. But as they soon discovered, disguises can sometimes be too perfect.

'This is a wonderful place for a picnic,' said Gloria Gleam.

'It couldn't be better, Gloria,' Brinksley Meers agreed. 'No newspaper men, no film fans! Why don't we come more often?'

Meanwhile, two other actors, Rockwall Slinger and Merlin Greeves, had carried two large food baskets to a shady spot under some trees. When they had all made themselves comfortable, a stranger appeared. He looked very angry. 'Now you get out of here, all of you!' he shouted. 'I'm sheriff here. Do you see that notice? It says "No Camping" -- in case you can't read!'

'Look, sheriff,' said Rockwall, 'don't be too hard on us. I'm Rockwall Slinger and this is Merlin Greeves.'

'Oh, is it?' said the sheriff with a sneer. 'Well, I'm Brinksley Meers, and my other name is Gloria Gleam. Now you get out of here fast!'

Out of the limelight

eg: Although he is a government official, he tries to keep out of the limelight.

2.An ancient bus stopped by a dry river bed and a party of famous actors and actresses got off.

eg: Are you stopping for supper?

a party of tourists/robbers/thieves

get off 下车,离开,也可表示(使某人入睡);下班;不再讨论某事(+sth.)get sth. off 邮寄某物

3. Dressed in dark glasses and old clothes, they had taken special precautions so that no one should recognize them.

Dressed in dark glasses and old clothes 是主句的伴随状语;they had taken special precautions 是主干

eg: He is interested in English. He listens to BBC every day.

Interested in English,he listens to BBC every day.

so that no one should recognize them 是目的状语从句

=s o that people wouldn’t recognized them

=so that they would not be recognized by movie fans

=so as to avoid being recognized

=so as to prevent people from recognizing them

4. But as they soon discovered, disguises can sometimes be too perfect.

例如:eg:I watched a movie yesterday. / Yesterday I watched a movie.

disguise

1)disguise sb/sth with sth disguise sb/sth as sb/sth.

eg:The theives disguised themselves as security guards.

eg: I couldn't disguise my anger

eg:I didn't recognize him because he is in disguise.

5. 'This is a wonderful place for a picnic,' said Gloria Gleam. 'It couldn't be better, Gloria,' Brinksley Meers agreed. 'No newspaper men, no film fans! Why don't we come more often?'

1) It couldn’t be better.

=It would not be possible to find a better place.

=This is the best place.

eg: It couldn’t have been worse.(真是坏透了)

2) No newspaper men, no film fans!

There are no newspaper men and no film fans!

3) Why not?

Why don’t you have a rest?

Why not + do sth.?

Why not have the basement painted?

Why not speak it up?

6. Meanwhile, two other actors, Rockwall Slinger and Merlin Greeves, had carried two large food baskets to a shady spot under some trees.

Verb + obj + adj (补语)

eg: Let’s get everything ready in time.

eg: The chairman declared the meeting open.

2)get out of here 从这里走开,滚出去

eg: Why don’t you get the dog out?

eg: The door is locked. I can’t get out.

get over

eg: Has your mother got over her illness?

eg: They wanted to get the job over as quickly as possible.

9. 'I'm sheriff here. Do you see that notice? It says "No Camping" -- in case you can't

read!’

1)I'm sheriff here. (sheriff

eg: He is president.

eg: Who is monitor?

eg: I am a teacher.

2)No Camping!

no+名词/动名词或名词短语,如:No Camping(禁止野营),No smoking(禁止吸烟),

No Parking(禁止停车),No Left Turn (禁止左转弯)。

No Smoking

No Photos 请勿拍照No Visitors 游人止步No Entry 禁止入内

No Admittance 闲人免进No Honking 禁止鸣喇叭No Litter 勿乱扔杂物

No Passing

3)in case you can't read,

eg: I'm taking a raincoat with me in case I need it.

eg: In case he comes/should come, give him this letter.

eg: He is always hard on his employees.

11. 'Oh, is it?' said the sheriff with a sneer. ' Well, I'm Brinksley Meers, and my other name is Gloria Gleam. Now you get out of here fast!'

If the Houses of Parliament had not been burned down in 1834, the great clock would never have been erected. Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who was responsible for the making of the clock when the new Houses of Parliament were being built. It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate as well. Officials from Greenwich Observatory have the clock checked twice a day. On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower. Big Ben has rarely gone wrong. Once, however, it failed to give the correct time. A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down! 1.

2. s heriff with a sneer… ‘Now you get out of here fast!’可以判断只有d. didn’t believe that they were famous actors 是课文所暗示的情况,其他3个选择都与课文内容无关。 a. perfect 完美, b. quite perfect 相当完美, c. more perfect than is convenient(非常的,超常的完美) d. almost perfect(几乎完美的)中,只有c. a. How 和 d. What a 最符合语法,所以选c.

How good a teacher she is! 如:Never be late again! Don’t forget to turn off the light. If I were a bird, I could fly in the air. I wish I could pass the examination.

May you succeed! If time permits, we’ll go fishing together. If you had come yesterday, you would have met that famous professor.

When a light passenger plane flew off course some time ago, it crashed in the mountains and its pilot was killed. The only passengers, a young woman and her two baby daughters, were unhurt. It was the middle of winter. Snow lay thick on the ground. The woman knew that the nearest village was miles away. When it grew dark, she turned a suitcase into a bed and put the children inside it, covering them with all the clothes she could find. During the night, it got terribly cold. The woman kept as near as she could to the children and even tried to get into the case herself, but it was too small. Early next morning, she heard planes passing overhead and wondered how she could send a signal. Then she had an idea. She stamped out the letters "SOS" in the snow. Fortunately, a pilot saw the signal and sent a message by radio to the nearest town. It was not long before a helicopter arrived on the scene to rescue the survivors of the plane crash. 5、The woman knew that the nearest village was miles away. 6、When it grew dark, she turned a suitcase into a bed and put the children inside it, covering them with all the clothes she could find.
