by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1

George Willig loves to climb. He has climbed mountains for many years. In 1977, Willing decided to climb the second tallest building in the world —the World Trade Center in New York City. It is 110 floors high.

Willig planned his climb carefully. He made a special steel claw to fit on the outside of the building. He found a strong rope to wrap around his body. Willig tested the equipment on the building five times late at night. Only his close friends knew about his plan.

Willig began his climb at 6:30 a.m. on May 26. Soon a crowd of people gathered on the street. They watched the 27-year-old man make his way up slowly. Willig was 20 feet high before police found out what he was doing. They ordered him to come down, but he refused.

The crowd got bigger as Willig finally reached the top. Police asked for his autograph and then arrested him. At first, Willig was fined $250, 000. But later the major of New York changed the fine to $1.10, or one

penny for every floor of the building.

Passage 2

We all know that it is possible for ordinary people to make their homes on the equator, although often they may feel uncomfortably hot there. Millions do it. But as for the North Pole —we know that it is not only a dangerously cold place, but that people like you and me would find it quite impossible to live there. At the present time only some scientists and explorers can do so, and they use special equipment. Men have been traveling across and around the equator on wheels, on their feet or in ships for thousands of years; but only a few men, with great difficulty and in very recent time, have ever crossed the ice to the North Pole. So it may surprise you to learn that, when traveling by air, it is really safer to fly over the North Pole than over the equator. Of course,

this is not true about landings in the polar region (which passenger aeroplanes do not make), but the weather, if we are flying at a height of 5000 metres above the Pole, is a delight. At 4000 metres and more above the earth you can always be sure that you will not see a cloud in the sky as far as the eye can reach. In the tropics, on the other hand, you are not certain to keep clear of bad weather even at such heights as 18000 or 20000 metres.

Aeroplanes cannot climb as high or as quickly in cold air as in warm. Nor can clouds. In practice, this is an advantage to the aeroplane, which is already at a good height when it reaches the polar region and so does not need to climb, while at the same time cold air keeps the clouds down low.

1. “Millions do it.” is the second sentence. In this sentence “do it” refers to .

A. feeling uncomfortably hot on the equator

B. flying over the North Pole

C. flying over the equator

D. making homes on the equator

2. The polar region is .

A. a good place to land at by aeroplane

B. a good place to fly over

C. a good place to travel to by land

D. a good place to live at

3. It is a delight to fly at the Pole because there .

A. planes fly higher than at the equator

B. the eyes can reach about 4000 metres

C. planes are clear of bad weather

D. planes fly more quickly than at the equator

4. Aeroplanes can climb quickly .

A. in warm air

B. in cold air

C. when it reaches the polar region

D. only when the clouds are down low

5. Aeroplanes usually do not need to climb quickly or fly high in the polar region because .

A. they do not land there

B. there are not any clouds at all

C. they can cross the ice with special equipment

D. it is very cold

Unit 1 Presenting a Speech Road Building Good morning, everyone. Today I'l l be talking about the relationship between road building and the development of the American economy during the 18th century. About 300 years ago, the United States' economy was growing rapidly, mainly because of a booming trade in two important agricultural products: grain and cotton. Grain output in the eastern part of America increased quickly at that time due to the rapidly growing population and the large number of immigrants from Europe. As a result, the demand for grain almost doubled. For this reason, the trade in grain first developed in this part of the country. At the same time, the road system was gradually built up in order to transport the grain from the rural areas to various cities. The road building clearly helped develop the economy quickly in these areas and in the cities as well. During the same period, farmers in the South could get a large amount of laborers from Africa, and they started to grow cotton. As the cotton output increased, the farmers needed to sell it in other places. As a result, many roads were built to link the rural areas to the cities. At first, this trade of grain and cotton took place along the coast, or near rivers and lakes. It took place there because it was easy and cheap to transport goods from one place to another. Before 1700, it was very expensive to move the goods by road.
