A wealthy old lady who lived near Dr. Swift used to send him presents occasionally by her servant. Dr. Swift took her presents but never gave the boy anything for 1 trouble. One day as Swift was busy with his writing, 2 boy rushed into his room, knocked some books out of 3 place, threw his parcel on the desk and said, “My mistress(女主人) has sent you two of 4 rabbits.”

Swift turned 5 and said, “My boy, that is not the 6 to deliver your parcel. Now, you sit in my chair, watch my way of doing it and learn your lesson.”

The boy sat down. Swift went out, knocked on his door and waited. The boy said, “Come in.” The doctor entered, 7 (walk) to his desk and said, “8 you please sir, my mistress sends her kind regards and hopes you will accept these rabbits which her son shot this morning in her fields.”

The boy answered, “Thank you, my boy. Give your mistress and her son my thanks for their kindness and 9 is two shillings for yourself.” The doctor laughed, and after 10 , Swift never forgot to give the boy his tip.

At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I drove up to the light, it turned red, and I braked to a halt. I look left, right, and behind me. 1 . Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but 2 I sat, 3 (wait) the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.

I started wondering 4 I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of 5 (catch) by the police, because there was obviously no cop 6 around and there certainly would have been no danger in going 7 it.

Much later that night, the 8 question of why I’d stopped for that light came 9 to me. I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract (合同) we all have with each other. It’s not only the law, but it’s an agreement we have, and we trust 10 to honor it: we don’t go through red lights. Like most of us, I’m ready to be stopped from doing something bad by the social agreement that disapproves of it than by any law against it.

Did you know that in the mountains it can start to snow in August? It snows through the fall and winter. 1 , in spring, when all that snow melts, water falls down the mountainsides. Streams(溪流) form and come 2 to form rivers. Let’s follow one of the rivers in Utah.

The Bear River begins nearly 13,000 feet 3 in the mountains. It ends only 90 miles 4 , but it will have dropped about 9,000 feet first! The most surprising thing about this river is where 5 ends.

If you look at a map, you will see that nearly all rivers 6 (empty) into the sea. But 7 the water of the Bear River. This river flows into the Great Salt Lake, the

largest lake in the West. The rivers and streams that flow into the lake bring 8 them about two million tons of salt each year. And no fresh water flows away from the lake. 9 , the summer sun evaporates (蒸发) the fresh water, 10 (leave) the salt behind. The lake water is so salty that you c an’t sink in it, no matter how hard you try.

Malcolm Dalkoff., for the last 24 years he has been a professional writer. 1 is what he told me: As a boy in Rock Island, Dalkoff was terribly shy. He had few friends and no self-confidence. One day, his English teacher, Ruth Brauch, gave the class an assignment. The students had been reading To Kill a Mockingbird. 2 they were to write their own chapter that would follow the last chapter of the novel.

Dalkoff wrote 3 chapter and turned it in. Today he cannot recall anything special about the chapter he wrote, 4 what grade Mrs. Brauch gave him. What he 5 remember is the four words Mrs. Brauch wrote in the margin of the paper: “This is good writing.”

Four words. 6 changed his life.

“Until I read those words, I had no idea who was or what I was going to be,” he said. “After reading her note, I went home and wrote a short story, something I had always 7 (dream) of doing but never believed I could do.”

Over the rest of that year in school, he wrote many short stories and always brought them to school for Mrs. Brauch to evaluate. 8 was encouraging, tough and honest. “She was just9 I needed,” Dalkoff said.

His confidence grew. Dalkoff believes that 10 of this would have happened if that woman had not written those four words in the margin of his paper.

A white-bearded ancient man was walking over the hills and valleys of the world. On his back he carried a bag which moved uneasily as if something was trying to escape from it, but he settled it 1 his shoulders and walked on.

He was Father Time, traveling forever, and the bag he bore was filled with Tomorrows, 2 struggling to get out.

Each night at twelve o’clock, he opened the bag and flew out a Tomorrow, just 3 , with its wings of blue, and its shining feathers rising 4 hope. All the rest were kept back by Time’s strong hands and pushed deep in the bag.

Down flew the Tomorrow 5 (beat) its lovely feathers, 6 as it touched the earth, off fell its blue wings and it changed to an ordinary white bird which could not fly. It had become 7 Today. Everyone knows that Today isn’t as wonderful as Tomorrow, for Today can be held in one’s hands, accepted, unloved, but Tomorrow is full of mystery and beauty. It is desired by all the world. Even those who have little hope sigh, “Tomorrow may bring a change. Tomorrow life will be different.”

Everybody tried to catch the Tomorrow 8 it fell to the ground. They thought 9 they knew before hand what the Tomorrow carries, they could prepare

for it. So they put great nets on the trees, seeking to catch one before it changed his feather. 10 although they tried every means, the birds escaped and flew to the ground as Todays.

Mary and Peter were having a picnic with some friends near a river when Mary shouted, “Look! That’s a spaceship up 1 and it’s going to land here.” 2 (Frighten) by the strange spaceship, most of the young people got into their cars and drove away as quickly as possible.Peter loved Mary and always stayed close to her. 3 , more curious than frightened, watched the spaceship land and saw a door open. When 4 came out, they went to look into it. In the center of the floor, there was a pile of food. Peter followed Mary into the spaceship and did not hear the door 5 (close) behind him. The temperature fell rapidly and the two young people lost 6 consciousness.

When they came to, they were surprised to see that they were back by the river 7 . The spaceship had gone. Their car was nearby.

“What happened?” asked Mary.

Peter scratched his head, 8 (say)slowly, “Don’t ask me. Perhaps we had a dream. Come on. It’s time to go home.”

After driving about fifty meters, they found their way blocked by a thick wall made of 9 like glass. On the 10 side of the wall, a few strange beings stopped to look through it and read a notice, which, translated into English, said: “New arrivals at the Zoo: a pair of Earth inhabitants in their natural surroundings with their house on wheels.”

What Is Shyness?

Shyness is a social emotion that affects a person’s feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Shyness is about feeling uncomfortable, self-conscious, scared, nervous, or insecure around others. If people feel shy, they hold back on saying or doing things because they’re concerned about 1 others might respond. Physical sensations can be part of shyness, 2 —like feeling flushed(脸红), shaky, speechless, or breathless.

Shyness tends to strike in certain kinds of social situations — like the first day of school, when you’re meeting 3 new, being the first to begin a conversation with someone you feel attracted to, 4 giving a small speech in public. People are more likely to feel shy in situations 5 they’re not sure what will happen, how others will react, or when all eyes are on them. People are less likely to feel shy in situations where they know 6 to expect and what to do or say or where they are among familiar people.

Shyness can vary from person to person. People can be mildly shy, moderately shy, or extremely shy. Some people with mild to moderate shyness feel shy only in certain circumstances. For 7 people, shyness may feel uncomfortable at first, but it often melts away after a few minutes. 8 often learn to push through their

immediate shyness, 9 (know) they’ll warm up to new people or situations if they can just get through that first reaction.

People who are extremely shy find 10 hard to push through their first shyness. They may avoid social situations, have trouble making friends, or hold back on trying new things. Eventually this can do harm to their self-confidence and self-esteem.

When I was younger, never once 1 I imagine she would become my hero.

One day, we had a serious talk, 2 (tell) each other what we felt about our lives. Then, my mom spoke of losing her mother 3 she was only four years old. She told me how she was abused by her stepmother, 4 my grandfather did nothing to stop it. She described days when she went hungry 5 days when she was forced to eat 6 her abilities.

At age 15, she married and left the home 7 she never belonged.

When her marriage was over, my mom looked on the bright side and realized that she 8 had her children. We are her support, even 9 this day.

Now when I see my mom in a happy mood, I know she is not really as happy as she seems. This makes me wonder how a woman who has gone through so much can still be 10 for the ones she loves. How can she still manage to be happy and look to better days? Now I know. She can’t be human. She has to have super strength and power. My mom must be a super hero! She must be my hero.

My elder brother Steve gave me important lessons in 1 (value). For instance, Steve taught me to face the results of my behavior. 2 when I returned in tears from a basketball game, 3 was Steve who took the time to ask me what happened. When I explained that my basketball had flown through Mrs Holt’s basement window, 4 (break) the glasses, Steve encouraged me to confess(承认) to her. Although my knees shook 5 me as I explained to Mrs Holt, I offered to pay for the window. I 6 learned from Steve that 7 (person) property is invaluable. Once I found a shiny silver pen in my class room and wanted to keep it, 8 Steve explained that it might be important to someone else though it had little value. Then I returned it to my teacher, Mrs Daids. Yet 9 all the lessons, his respect for life is the most vivid in my mind. Once I killed a bird with a BB gun and screamed to Steve to come and have a look. After a long moment of staring at the bird on the ground, he asked in a dead and quiet voice, “Did it hurt you first, Mark?” I didn’t know what to answer. He continued with his eyes firm, “The only time you should even think of hurting a living thing is if it hurts you first. And 10 you think a long, long time.”

I felt nervous and shaky. It was the first time, 1 . I drew the violin from my coat like a gun. It was here, in Southampton, with training trains roaring

overhead, 2 I was about to declare myself. One moment I was part of the 3 (hurry) crowds, the next I stood apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the pavement before me, the violin under my chin.

The first notes I played were loud and raw, like a hoarse (嘶哑的) declaration of war, then 4 settled down and began to run more or less in tune. To my surprise, I was neither arrested 5 told to shut up. Indeed nobody took any notice at all. 6 an old man, without stopping, stealthily (悄悄地)threw a penny into my hat as though 7 (get rid of) some guilty evidence.Other pennies followed, slowly but steadily, 8 (drop) by shadows who appeared not to see or hear me. 9 was as though the notes of the violin touched some subconscious nerves —like a baby’s cry that had to be answered. When I’d finished the first tune there was a shilling in my hat; it seemed too easy, like a confidence trick. But I was high-spirited; I felt 10 I went from here this was a trick I could always live by.

Were you the first or the last child in your family? Or were you a middle or an only child? Some people think 1 matters where you were born in your family. D 如将A项中was, since改成is, since是正确的;即从句中谓语先发生。 5. C whichever已失去疑问含义,等于 anything that,表示强调; 而 which topic中 which保留疑问含义,译成"哪一个题目",不符合句义。而A和D中缺少连词。
