Unit 4 Career Planning

Part Two Reading-Centered Activities

In-Class Reading

I. Pre-Reading

Samples

1) I t’s a job which requires many skills in dealing with people. For example, they should have a very good attitude towards people and provide good service for those who come to their office. Their main task involves doing paperwork in the office, answering phone calls and helping people go through formalities. They have a steady salary, and lead a comparatively leisurely life. They don’t have to go on business trips very often. They go to work at 9 in the morning, and get back home at 5 in the afternoon, and they are also called nine-to-fivers. They are not fired easily because they are employed by the government. Not many people would like to take the job before, but now it’s very popular. People even have to take and pass tests to get employed, and the competition is tough. The government keeps raising the salary of these people partly an attempt to keep them from corruption.

(Answer: government office worker, or civil servant)

2) First of all, I am working very hard on my required courses, especially English. To pass CET band 4 and 6 is a must for a better job. In the English class, I am very active in group discussions because I know getting the certificate of CET is not enough. What really counts is my ability to use English. I am also involved in some social work in the university in order to get myself prepared for serving society, so that I can form a good relationship with my colleagues and business partners in my future work. Warm-heartedness is also a very important attribute for my future career. I participated in some money-raising activities to help those victims of floods and earthquakes. If possible, I would also learn to drive. Having a driver’s license will enable me to have a better chance in the job market, I think. Well, it seems that I

have a lot to do to get ready for the future.

3. Teaching tips

The teacher may organize the interview in the following way:

1) Choose an interview panel of three or four students. Choose three students for the panel to interview for the job of a store detective. Hold the interviews. When they are over, the panel

should discuss the qualifications of the applicants and choose the one they think is best.

2) Ask the class to talk about the interviews. Ask questions such as:

Do you agree with the panel’s decision?

If you were a member of the panel, which job applicant would you choose, why?

Were the interviews fair?

How could the applicants have done better?

Samples

—I agree wit h the panel’s decision. First, the applicant is very confident in answering the questions and he knows what he is supposed to do. Second, he is quick-minded and very strong. Third, he is interested in the job and is ready to dedicate himself to the job. Finally, he has previous experience in working as a store detective.

—I don’t agree with the panel’s decision. I think the panel puts too much emphasis on the appearance of the applicants. I think Applicant B is much more suited for the job. He has a warmer personality. He can be a good store detective as well as a good staff member, because I don’t think the sole responsibility for a detective is to check on the shoppers. He should also help the customers when possible.

—Generally speaking, I think the panel has made a wise decision and chosen the right one for the job. Yet I think the applicant could have done better by not being so conceited and boastful about his own ability. After all, people cannot trust too much what a person says about himself without further investigation. What’s more, team spirit is very important. If he is not easy-going and feels too good about himself, it will be difficult for others to cooperate with him. I also doubt whether he will listen to the boss.

2. Which Career Is the Right One for You?

Sample

STEP ONE: I chose Nature.

STEP TWO:

Scientific: scientist, professor, geneticist, technician, architect, researcher, engineer

Social: nurse, lawyer, doctor, dentist, policeman, taxi-driver, bus-driver, teacher

General service: waiter, librarian, porter, bus-driver, counselor, civil servant,

Artistic: graphic designer, painter, writer, poet, photographer, film-director Computational: accountant, statistician, stock broker, cashier, mathematician

Practical: tiler, mechanic, carpenter, plumber, tailor, cook, knitter

Nature: gardener, vet, farmer, fisherman, animal keeper, landscaper

Outdoor/Active: postman, construction worker, guide, sailor, policeman, athlete

STEP THREE:

I’d like to be a gardener. Maybe it sounds strange to you, but that idea appeals to me. To be a gardener, I can have a chance to know more about plants, because I am always interested in all sorts of plants, and I’d like to know where my food comes from and how it grows. I enjoy taking pictures of beautiful flowers and plants. By working outside, I can breathe fresh air, smell the pleasant scent of flowers, and look at the beautiful blue sky. How intoxicating!

That’s my ideal life! It’s also a simple life. I hate to deal with complicated interpersonal relationships as one does while working in offices and companies. What I am required to do is

only to take care of the plants which I love. Besides, gardening can be a hobby to share with family members and friends, a stress reliever or an escape from the day-to-day grind.

3)In Ad D, ―detail-oriented‖ means careful and me ticulous.

4)In Ad F, ―financial statements‖ means report of the finances (of a certain company) (财务报

告).

5)In Ad G, ―legal trainee‖ means someone who is receiving, or has received training

concerning legal matters.

4. What Matters Most?

Sample

STEP ONE & STEP TWO

(The following factors have been listed according to their importance):

? a high salary;

?lots of perks (工资以外的实物或好处), e.g. a company car, reimbursing travel expenses, vacation;

?an opportunity, through your job, to serve others in the community/in society;

?good promotion prospects;

? a pleasant, friendly working atmosphere;

?short working hours—not more than 35 hours a week;

? a good boss;

?pleasant colleagues;

?career orientation;

?suitable for one’s natural/professional talents/skills;

?interesting tasks;

?good safety record;

?clean environment;

?restaurant in the building;

?good location (near bus stop, highway, metro, etc.);

?opportunity for travel, especially going abroad;

?opportunities for professional development/job training;

?daycare facilities;

?school nearby.

STEP THREE: I will explain why I list ―a high salary, perks and serving the society‖ as the three most important factors contributing to my job satisfaction. Even though we do not work to live, still, it’s a very realistic and materialistic world. Without money, we can do nothing.

After we graduate, we have to repay our parents’support for our education, to make their lives better. Also, we have to buy or rent our own apartments. Very soon, perhaps we will have a child. How can we support the family? Only by working hard and earning a good

salary. But of course, money is not my only pursuit. Career satisfaction also involves serving the society. I can derive a lot of pleasure from the fact that I can use my knowledge and ability to make contributions to the society. So it’s really a win-win situation in my opinion.

5. Are Summer Jobs Necessary?

Sample

1) I think the following jobs are not practical in China: 1) baby-sitting, and 2) opening a

lemonade stand. The following jobs are practical: 3) working in the library or in the cafeteria, 4) tutoring, 5) being a waiter or waitress and 6) being a teaching assistant.

I’d like to say something about why being a baby-sitter is not practical in China. The main reason is that China has adopted one-child-per-family policy. Very often the only child is the so-called ―prince‖ or ―princess‖ in the family. On the one hand, parents and grandparents dote on the only child so much that they don’t feel at ease to allow a young student to take care of them. On the other hand, we students are also the only child in our families. We know nothing about baby-sitting and cannot be expected to be able to take good care of other people’s kids. What’s more, our parents believe students’major responsibility at school is to study. They don’t think we should spend our precious time baby-sitting instead of studying. These are the reasons why I think it is not practical for college students to be baby-sitters in China.

I think being a tutor is not only practical but also a very good job. Many college

students use their summer time or weekends to tutor middle-school students. They teach kids either English or Math, two very important subjects. The reasons why college students can be tutors are as follows: First, they like to be tutors because they enjoy teaching what they excel at while receiving pay. Also, their parents also think it is a good job. And, high school students like to be tutored by college students because they have more in common in terms of hobbies and interests. Parents also like college students to tutor their kids because they are good examples for their kids. What’s more, they pay less to a student tutor than to a teacher tutor. That’s why many college students like to be tutors.

2) Advantages:

—enable one to earn some money to pay for college expenses and part of their tuition fees; —help one to gain some work experience;

—help one to compare different jobs and form a clear idea about their future career;

—help one to learn about the outside world;

—help to apply and practice what he/she learns at the university;

—help one to gain additional training;

—help one to make contacts, meet new people;

—help one to learn to work with other people;

—help one to serve the community or help others.

Disadvantages:

—distract one’s attention from studies;

—make one become too practical;

—make one become money-oriented;

—spoil one’s vacation, which could be spent on relaxation, traveling, etc.

—cause one to spend more tim e away from one’s family;

—tiring, unhealthy work conditions;

—prevent one from taking summer courses.
