The flood of wome n into the job market boosted econo mic growth and cha nged U.S. society in many ways. Many in-home jobs that used to be done 15 by wome n — ranging from family shopp ing to prepari ng meals to doing 16 work — still n eed to be done by some one. Husba nds and childre n now do some of these jobs, a situati on that has cha nged the target market for many products. Or a working woman may face a crushing “ poverty of time ” and look for help elsewhere,

creating opportunities for producers of frozen meals, child care centers, dry cleaners, financial services, and the like.

Although there is still a big wage gap betwee n men and wome n, the in come work ing wome n 17 gives them new independence and buying power. For example, women now 18 about half of all cars. Not long ago, many cars dealers 19 women shoppers by ignoring them or suggesting that they 20 their husbands. Now car companies have realized that women are 21 customers. It ' s interesting that some leading Japanese car dealers were the first to rea2y

Passage One

Questio ns 44 to 48 are based on the follow ing passage.

Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon aba ndoned their flowers and in sects. Un like them, I had no ear for music and Ian guages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.

Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory

of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of the dogs, the farm an imals, the local birds and, above all the in sects.

I am a n aturalist, not a scie ntist. I have a strong love of the n atural world, and my en thusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people ' observations and discoveries. Then something happe ns that brings these observati ons together in my con scious mind. Sudde nly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle (谜),because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.

But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scie ntist requires not only self-discipli ne but all training, determ in atio n and a goal. A scie ntist, up to a point, can be made. A n aturalist is born. If you can comb ine the two, you get the best of both worlds.

44. The first paragraph tells us that the author _______ .

A) was born to a naturalist ' s family

B) lost his heari ng whe n he was a child

C) didn ' t like his brothers and sisters

D) was in terested in flowers and in sects in his childhood

45. The author can ' t remember his relatives clearly because __________ .

A) he didn ' t live very long with them

B) he was fully occupied with observi ng n ature

C) he was too young whe n he lived with them

D) the family was extremely large

46. It can be inferred from the passage that the author was _______ .

A) no more tha n a born n aturalist

B) a n aturalist but not a scie ntist

C) a scie ntist as well as a n aturalist

D) first of all a scie ntist

47. The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he

A) lacks some of the qualities required of a scie ntist

B) has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic

C) just reads about other people ' s observations and discoveries

D) comes up with soluti ons in a most n atural way

48. According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be ________ .

A) full of ambiti on

B) full of en thusiasm

C) kno wledgeable

D) self-discipli ned

Passage Two

Questio ns 49 to 53 are based on the follow ing passage.

We find that bright childre n are rarely held back by mixed ability teach ing. On the con trary, both their kno wledge and experie nee are en riched. We feel that there are many disadva ntages in streaming (把…按

能力分班)pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouragi ng to be at the bottom of the top grade!

Besides, it is rather un real to grade people just accord ing to their in tellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value pers onal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teach ing con tributes to all these aspects of lear ning.

In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opport unity to lear n to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also lear n how to cope with pers onal problems as well as lear ning how to th ink, to make decisi ons, to an alyze and evaluate, and to com muni cate effectively. The pupils lear n from each other as well as from the teacher.

Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on in dividual tasks and assig nmen ts, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teach ing whe n this is appropriate. We en courage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advaneed pupil can do advaneed work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every en courageme nt to atta in this goal.

49. In the passage the author ' s attitude towardability t eachinixed is ________ .

A) critical

B) questi oning

C) approvi ng

D) objective

50. By “ held back ” (Line 1) the author means “_______ ”.

A) made to rema in in the same classes

B) forced to study in the lower classes

C) draw n to their studies

D) preve nted from adva ncing

51. The author argues that a teacher ' s chief concern should be the development of the student

A) pers onal qualities and social skills

B) total pers on ality

C) lear ning ability and com muni cative skills

D) in tellectual ability

52. Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in the third paragraph?

A) Group work gives pupils the opport unity to lear n to work together with each other.

B) Pupils also lear n to develop their reas oning abilities.

C) Group work provides pupils with the opport unity to lear n to be capable orga ni zers.

D) Pupils also lear n how to participate in teach ing activities.

53. The author ' s purpose in writing this passage is to _________ .

A) argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same class

B) recomme nd pair work and group work for classroom activities

C) offer advice on the proper use of the library

D) emphasize the importa nee of appropriate formal classroom teach ing

Sectio n B (10%)

Internet and Educati on

A Educati on plays a very importa nt role in everybody's life. We go to school because we want to know more

about the world around us and at the same time extend our horizons of thinking. The typical classroom used to be the place where teachers and students were working and exploring the wonderful world of knowledge together, but now everything has changed. Tech no logy is tak ing over those in teract ions and in troduci ng us to a whole new approach of lear ning.

B The Internet is one of those approaches. Learning via the Internet is a new style that many people believe is

more successful tha n the conven ti onal form of teach ing. The Internet allows schools to develop a large amount of lear ning material that is accessible for stude nts on li ne any time. There are so many choices of courses and subjects or time frames that completi ng a program is not an issue for students any more.

We found that online education gives us excelle nt sources of in formati on, saves our time, money and it is extremely convenient.

C Not long ago we used to go to the library every time we needed information and spent hours search ing for

the right sources. Today there is a "library "in our house and it is available 24 hours a day. From my personal experienee, as a first time mother, I found that using information online is very helpful. While I am at home with my baby, I am still able to connect to the world and search for any educational materials

I need. I am also able to exchange thoughts, opinions and in formati on with my classmates without leavi

ng my house.

D The Internet is not only a big information provider but also saves us money and time. People are predict ing

that educati on will be much cheaper in the future because of Internet access to information. The cost of land, buildings and wages for teachers are continuously increasing and that makes conventional

education more expensive than online education. In addition, regular courses (offline) depe nd heavily on books and other traditi onal paper-based materials while online education posts lectures, notes, and assignments electronically and that saves thousands of dollars every year. There is also no need for the classroom itself because most programs on li ne require participati on in discussi on and group projects via e-mail.

E The Internet classes and courses are also very convenient because there are no physical restrict ions as in

conven tio nal educati on like space and time limitati ons. First, in classroom-based education there is a limitation on the number of students that are allowed in each class while Internet educati on is available to every one because a classroom is not an issue there. Stude nts don't have to struggle in order to register for the classes they like. In additi on, there is no time limitation so students can repeat exercises as many times as they need.

F Educati on will spread out more and more on li ne and stude nts will have more choices on how and when

to take their courses and classes. They will easily be able to take the classes they want and repeat

material on the Internet as many times as they need. The Internet is a won derful opport unity to have a good time but also to learn someth ing in a convenient and less

expe nsive way. I n my opi nio n on li ne life in the future is simply in escapable.

54. Online education is characterized by rich information, time and money saving, and extreme

convenience.
