People have wondered for a long time how their personalities,and behaviors are formed.It is not easy to explain why oneperson is intelligent and another is not,or why one is cooperative and another is competitive.

Those who support thenurturetheory,that is,they advocate education,are often called behaviorists.They claim that our

environment is more important than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act.A behaviorist,B.F.Skinner,sees humans as beings whose behavior is almost completely shaped by their surroundings.(64)The behaviorists maintain that,like machines,humans respond to environmental stimuli as the basis of their behavior.

Let us examine the different explanations about one human characteristic,intelligence,offered by the two theories.(65)Supporters of thenaturetheory insist that we are born with a certain capacity for learning that is biologically determined.Needless to say,they don’t believe that factors in the environment have much influence on what is basically a predetermined characteristic.On the other hand,behaviorists argue that our intelligence levels are the product of our experiences.(66)Behaviorists suggest that the child who is raised in an environment where there are many stimuli whichdevelop his or her capacity for appropriate responses will experience greater intellectual development.

The social and political implications of these two theories are profound.(67)In the United States,blacks often score below whites on standardized intelligence tests.This leads somenatureproponents to conclude that blacks are biologically inferior to whites.(68)Behaviorists,in contrast,say that differences in scores are due to the fact that blacks are often deprived of many of the educational and other environmental advantages that whites enjoy.

Most people think neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behavior.

To begin with,the world food supply is going to become steadily tighter over the next thirty years―even here in the United States.By2001,the population of the United States will be at least two hundred fifty million and possibly two hundred seventy million,and the nation will find it difficult to expand food production to fill the additional mouths.(74)This will be particularly true since energy pinch will make it difficult to continue agriculture in the highenergy American fashion that makes it possible to combine few farmers with high yields.

It seems almost certain that by2001the United States will no longer be a great foodexporting nation and that,if necessity forces exports,it will be at the price of belttightening at home.

In fact,as food items will end to decline in quality and decrease in variety,there is very likely to be incresing use of flavouring additives.(75)Until such time as mankind has the sense to lower its population to the point where the planet can provide a comfortable support for all,people will have to accept moreunnatural food.

This kind of support,like all government support,requires

decisions about the appropriate recipients of funds.Decisions based on utility as opposed to lack of utility are straight forward.But a decision among projects none of which has immediate utility is more difficult.The goal of the supporting agencies is the praisable one of supportinggoodas opposed tobadscience,but a valid determination is difficult to make.Generally,the idea of good science tends to become confused with the capacity of the field in question to generate an elegant theory.(74)However,the world is so made that elegant systems are in principle unable to deal with some of the worlds more fascinating and delightful aspects.(75)New forms of thought as well as new subjects for thought must arise in the future as they have in the past,giving rise to new standards of elegance.

2020考博英语翻译解题三大步骤 一理解原文 什么叫理解?照字面解释,理解就是懂、了解的意思,即懂原文, 了解原文。这里说的理解,就是译者利用两种语言的词汇、语法、修 辞等知识,来理解原文的内容和风格。理解必须通过具体的语言现象、具体的上下文。一个词,一个词组,甚至一个句子,如果脱离上下文,是难以确定其意义的。苏联翻译家索伯列夫指出:“ 在绝绝大部分情 况下,一个词脱离上下文的关系是不能翻译的。”“离开上下文的密 切联系来翻译一个词,总是不可避免地要歪曲原文的意思。”所以, 一定要从上下文的关系上来理解原文,来探索一切可能的译法。上下 文是什么呢?能够是一个句子,一个段落,也能够是一章一节,以至全书。 理解是表达的前提,理解得好坏是表达得好坏的关键。有些作品,有些人译得好,有些人译得不好,就是理解深度不同。一个句子,各 人理解的水准不同,译文也不一样,所以,理解是重要的一环。 那么,如何理解原文呢?应从哪些方面去理解原文呢? 首先要理解原文的语言。即通过原作的语言现象来理解原作的内容。因为原作的思想、内容是通过原作的语言形式表达出来的,懂得 语言形式及其含意,是理解原作整体内容的基础。请看下面的句子: ①冻死了。 ②他眼红了。 “冻死”是真的受冻而死,一命呜呼,还是表示冷得厉害?“眼红”是眼睛因病而红,还是嫉妒别人的意思?两个句子都不好译。不好译, 是因为没能理解原文中的真正意义。 如果这两例变成:

③今天我下地窖去取菜,冻死了。 ④王生看见别人做生意赚了很多钱,他眼红了。 现在我们能够通过联系上下文的关系去理解原文了。“冻死”是 冻得要死的意思。能够译成“gysengj yaek dai”;“眼红”是嫉妒的 意思,可译成“hozgenz dangqmaz”。 这是要理解的第一个问题。 其次是理解全文的逻辑关系。一篇文章或者一部著作,它除了以 内容和事实说服人或感动人之外,往往还通过逻辑推理来服人、破人。所以要深刻地理解原文,有时还要上下有联系地去理解其中的逻辑关系。细致地去推敲原文的含义,分析出它的来龙去脉;同时要根据自己 的生活体验,估计实际情况,思考自己的理解是否合情合理,有无漏洞,有无逻辑不通的地方。逻辑关系的理解,有时也显得作用重大, 它能够帮助我们理解按原文语法关系所不能理解的问题,或者使我们 发现译文中译错的地方。举两个例子说明吧。 例1 这项前无古人的伟大事业,将推动历史的前进。 有人译成:“Han gh saeh hung gaxgonq mbouj miz vunz daihlaux neix,yaik doidoengh lizsij doxbae.” 这样译,表面似乎对,实际上并不对。什么叫做“gaxgonq mbouj miz vunz diahlaux”(以前没有古人)呢?这“mbouj miz vunz diahlaux neix”,又怎能推动历史的前进呢?译者硬搬原文的词义, 造成了逻辑不通了。“前无古人”,并不是“gaxgonq mboujmiz vunz daihlaux”,而是“从来没有人干过”的意思,应译成“gaxgonq mbouq mbouj miz vunz guh gvaq.” 例2 那几天他闹肚子,弄得全身无力,被昏倒在工地上 这个例句的关键词是“闹肚子”。有译者译成:
